Prayer for Refugees

The Moderator of the Uniting Church in South Australia, Dr Deidre Palmer, has asked members of the church to pray for the people of Syria, for refugees fleeing conflict in Syria and other people around the world who are seeking refuge. She has sent us this prayer that encourages the Australian community to offer welcome and support for those suffering at this time.

God of welcome and hope,

We bring before you today the people of Syria and the millions of refugees around the world who are fleeing violence in their homelands.

You hear the cries of those who suffer – children, women and men who are traumatised by the brutality of others' actions.

As your people, fill us with your compassion that we might act in solidarity to provide comfort and shelter for those who seek refuge and hospitality among us.

Be with those who are decision makers, including our political leaders, as they discern a way forward.

Be with those who are delivering emergency relief and those tasked with resettling refugees.

Sustain them in their work and provide them with strength.

May we have hearts that are open to your Spirit's guidance.

Encourage us to work together to help those rebuilding their lives in the safety and freedom of Australia.

May you give us courage to be advocates for a peaceful and just world.
